Is it just me or do you also get overprotective over your favourite lanes? I ask because it annoyed me the other day when I watched a group of 4×4 owners ‘charge’ up a green lane that’s not far from me. It happened to be a Bank holiday too, and whilst some of the crowd of wandering onlookers were watching and cheering, others weren’t so impressed.

Turner’s Torque

Getting narked, lost lanes & electric ideas… Is it just me or do you also get overprotective over your favourite lanes?

I ask because it annoyed me the other day when I watched a group of 4×4 owners ‘charge’ up a green lane that’s not far from me. It happened to be a Bank holiday too, and whilst some of the crowd of wandering onlookers were watching and cheering, others weren’t so impressed.

Yes I know, we all have every right to be there, and drive a lane however we want, but chatting to an ex-copper recently, he said that even on byways, driving erratically and chucking it on YouTube means that you could still be done for dangerous driving and endangering the life of others!

I appreciate that we all have different driving techniques when faced with difficult challenges. Personally I like to take it as slow as I can and creep over rock steps; not only am I minimising damage to whichever vehicle I’m driving, but also to the track.

On the subject of favourite lanes, I was recently looking through some old photos and realised just how many locals ones we’ve lost over the years.

There’s one in particular in between Bolton and Blackburn near a little place called Tockholes. It got closed when I wasn’t watching, and I suspect it was partially down to someone buying and spending a lot of money on a barn conversion next to the entrance. Obviously I could be completely wrong.

It would still be fun to utilise these restricted byways, but I really don’t have the time, nor the energy, to go walk them, but ….. an electric mountain bike, now that’s an idea that requires further investigation…
