Motoring Classics Winter 2012

TR fans will need little introduction to BMH dealer Moss Europe, whose history from office-less supplier to the TR Register to £15.6 million company occupying 60,000 sq ft of modern warehousing is explored on the opposite page. We owe much to such businesses, without which most of the cars that underpin our hobby would long since have departed for that big scrapyard in the sky.

The clubs and owners of the ubiquitous MGB have done a splendid job of celebrating the model’s 50th anniversary this year; a highlight of which was the MGCC’s lecture involving key figures from the car’s history. You can get a flavour of that memorable evening from this issue, as well as details of a DVD covering that and many other events from the B’s big birthday year.

This issue’s Missing Moniker is Fairthorpe, the brainchild of Don Bennett – a multi-faceted individual arguably best known for commanding the RAF’s Pathfinder Force in WWII. Another man of many talents was Les Leston, our Classic Character on this occasion. A successful driver in his early years, he then did much to pioneer the flame retardant overalls that are a requirement for all today’s racers.

Costly but vital, car insurance holds many traps for the unwary. We sought the advice of two expert businesses for this issue. We also visited the company that have restored over 70 percent of the world’s airworthy Hawker Hurricanes. At around £3 million each, refurbished examples are beyond the pocket of most of us. Not so the products of Motoring Classics, many of which make ideal gifts – further details can be found together with our equally seasonal competition on pages 14/15.

All the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Dealer Spotlight: Moss Europe

Over 0.5 million classic Triumph sports cars were manufactured, spares for which were soon hard to come by. Had the likes of Moss Europe (née Cox & Buckles) not had the foresight to produce replacements, most such cars would have long since disappeared.

MGB Legends Spill The Beans

On October 4, the MGB Register of the MGCC lined up no less than seven men who’ve done more than most to make the MGB the coveted classic it is – the results were memorable.

Missing Moniker: Fairthorpe

Try as we might, most of us fail to leave that indelible mark on life that separates the achievers from the also-rans. Don Bennett’s 76 years on earth created many legacies, however, including Fairthorpe.

Classic Character: Les Leston (1920-2012)

A pioneer of flame retardant racing overalls, Les Leston was a successful driver, jazz musician, WWII aircraft gunner, businessman and broadcaster – i.e. a multi-talented character of a bygone era.

Hurricane Force

Though the immortal Spitfire generally gets top billing, 60 percent of RAF victories in the Battle of Britain were achieved by Hurricanes. Hawker Restorations are the world’s leading restorer of these iconic aircraft.
